ARETHA FRANKLIN: RELEASES STATEMENT ON HAYES' DEATH

The Queen of Soul is among those paying tribute to soul icon Isaac Hayes. And her tribute to Hayes also comes with a warning. Aretha Franklin said it was ``so sad'' to hear about Hayes' death and said his musical compositions were ``advanced and timeless.'' She also referred to him as ``an enduring symbol of the struggle of the African-American man and was a shining example of soul at its best.'' Franklin went on to advise ``gentlemen of the world'' to get regular checkups because ``it's far better to know sooner than later.'' She adds: ``If you take care of self, self will take care of you most of the way.''

ISAAC HAYES/BERNIE MAC: BOTH DECEASED STARS IN UPCOMING MOVIE

It isn't due out until the fall. But already the movie ``Soul Men'' is getting a lot of attention -- but for a pretty eerie reason. Two of the movie's stars, Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac, have died -- and they passed away within 24 hours of each other. Bernie Mac passed away this past Saturday at age 50, of complications from pneumonia. And Hayes died on Sunday, after collapsing at his home in Memphis. He was 65. Both deaths were unexpected and both men had prominent roles in the film, which ironically is about death. The Internet Movie Data Base says Bernie Mac stars opposite Samuel L. Jackson as a pair of soul singing legends who were feuding with each other, but who decide to take part in a reunion performance to honor their recently deceased bandleader. Hayes plays himself in the film.

ISAAC HAYES: FAMILY DISCOVERED MUSICIAN AFTER COLLAPSE

What began as an outing to the grocery store ended in tragedy for Isaac Hayes' family. A spokesman for the sheriff's office in Memphis, Tennessee says authorities got a 911 call shortly after Hayes' wife, young son and wife's cousin returned home from a trip to buy groceries. They reported they found Hayes collapsed in a downstairs bedroom, lying unresponsive near a treadmill, which was still running. A deputy gave Hayes CPR until paramedics arrived. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead about an hour later.

. ISAAC HAYES: SOUL LEGEND DIES; WROTE OSCAR-WINNING THEME FROM ``SHAFT''

Isaac Hayes once wanted to be a doctor. But instead, he taught himself to be a musician and went on to create a song that won both an Oscar and Grammy. Hayes has passed away. He died yesterday afternoon at age 65. With his bald-shaved head, deep voice and chains he often wore on stage, Hayes embodied much of what was soul music during the 1970s. His ``Theme From Shaft'' reached number one on the charts in 1971 and earned him a Grammy and Oscar the following year. His performance at that year's Academy Awards earned him a standing ovation and was also voted one of the top televised moments by TV Guide, Hayes' career went in a different direction in 1997 when he became the voice of ``Chef,'' the school cook and ladies' man on the animated TV show ``South Park.'' But he is also considered an influence to both the disco era and to rappers. Hayes said in an interview that if you'd ask any old-school rappers, they would acknowledge that they ``created a lot of hit music based upon my influence.''

Hayes was elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

ISAAC HAYES: LOOKING BACK

Isaac Hayes taught himself music and in the process, taught the music world a lot. He was born in 1942 in a tin shack in Covington, Tennessee, a town located about 40 miles north of Memphis. He was raised by his maternal grandparents after his mother died and his father took off when he was a 1{ years old. The family moved to Memphis when he was 6. He was hired in 1964 by Stax Records of Memphis as a backup pianist. He worked as a session musician for artists like Otis Redding and played the saxophone along with writing songs. He teamed up with David Porter to co-write the Sam and Dave songs ``Hold On, I'm Coming'' and ``Soul Man'' -- a couple of songs that led to his landing a record deal with Stax. In addition to the Grammy he won for ``Shaft,'' he won another Grammy for his album ``Black Moses'' and did a couple of other music scores. He also did work in front of the movie cameras, appearing in ``It Could Happen to You,'' ``Ninth Street,'' ``Reindeer Games'' and ``I'm Gonna Git You Sucka.''

Stroke listed as Hayes' cause of death

Updated: Aug 12, 2008 04:33 PM CDT

A stroke claimed the life of legendary soul singer Isaac Hayes, according to the singer's doctor.

Dr. David Kraus, Hayes' family physician, listed stroke associated with hypertension as the singer’s cause of death on his death certificate, Shelby County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Steve Shular said Tuesday.

Family members found Hayes lying on the floor next to a treadmill in his home early Sunday afternoon. He was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators said there was no indication that Hayes suffered fell or suffered any trauma before his stroke.

At Stax Soulsville Museum Tuesday, a bouquet of flowers hung on the door underneath a marque that read "IN LOVING MEMORY OF ISAAC HAYES." Tim Sampson at Stax said the museum has been flooded with phone calls from across the world from well-wishers.

"It's funny. Everybody says he helped them through their college days and their high school days with his music," Sampson said. "Anytime they were having a hard time, they just put on Isaac Hayes, listen to him, (and) felt better.

"His influence was a lot bigger than I think anybody ever really imagined."

If you want to send a condolence card to Hayes' family, the museum asks you to send it to Stax, who will get the cards to family members.

According to a press release from an outlet called “Hollywood Movie Report,” the actor was supposed to star in “Sweetwater,” a biopic about the first African-American player signed by the NBA. BERNIE MAC:  DAUGHTER SAYS FAMILY WAS HOPING FOR BEST, FEARING WORST

As shocked as most people were to hear of the death of Bernie Mac, his daughter says family members were expecting him to pull through, too. Je'Niece Childress says when her dad went to the hospital three weeks ago, the family expected him to recover from the bout of pneumonia that put him there. But she tells The Associated Press that as time went on, she and her mom braced for the possibility that he might lose his fight against the lung ailment. He lost that fight on Saturday at age 50. Childress was Bernie Mac's only child and the comedian and her mom were married 32 years. While she says her day may have been a hard man when it came to the industry, that wasn't the case at home. She says when it came to her, her daughter and his wife, ``he was the softest.'' Childress says funeral arrangements are pending and that a public memorial is set for next weekend in his hometown of Chicago.

BERNIE MAC: LAST MAJOR APPEARANCE MARKED BY CONTROVERSY

Though Bernie Mac had polished up his image from his ``Kings of Comedy'' days to make it more family friendly, his last high-profile gig generated some controversy. He made a surprise appearance at a July fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. He did a 10-minute routine for his fellow Chicago native. But toward the end, he joked about subjects like menopause, sexual infidelity and sleeping around and used some foul language. When Obama took the stage later, he urged Mac to clean up his act. And even though Obama added that he was ``just messing'' with the comedian, his campaign later issued a statement saying Obama believed some of the comments were ``inappropriate."

 Morgan Freeman
divorce rumors are true. His friend and business partner Bill Luckett confirms  there is a divorce pending between the actor and his wife of more than 20 years, Myrna Colley-Lee.

Late Sunday night the renowned actor was in a car accident in Mississippi and airlifted to a hospital in Memphis. He is said to be doing well after undergoing surgery Monday to repair damage to his left arm and hand.

The surgery "lasted approximately four and a half hours including recovery and he is in good spirits and was visiting with family members this morning," Donna Lee, Freeman's publicist, said in a statement Tuesday.

"He was walking this (morning), and is looking forward to his release as soon as possible," Lee said.

Freeman, 71, and Demaris Meyer, 48, of Memphis, Tenn., were involved in the accident on a dark stretch of rural Mississippi Delta highway in Tallahatchie County.

State troopers said the car careened off the highway and flipped end-over-end before landing upright in a ditch. Rescuers used a jaws-of-life machine to free "The Dark Knight" star and Meyer from the wreckage of the car.

Teacher's helper fills gaps in music instructors' development

When Dr. Deanna Stark taught elementary school music for Memphis City Schools, she found herself, like many teachers, struggling for classroom resources and creative freedom.

"The schools have no money for anything," said Stark, 43, of Memphis, who began teaching in 1988. "The last computer I had had no sound on it, so if the kids were working on music software, they couldn't listen to their work."

Last September, Stark created her own business, Sister Squared, filling in the gaps in music teachers' professional development and resources using Orff Schulwerk, a methodology for teaching music adopted by Memphis City Schools' elementary curriculum to enhance the learning experience for teachers and students alike.

"Everything that I really like to do with teaching and music has congealed in this," said Stark, who holds a bachelor's degree in music education and sacred music, a master's in Orff and a Ph.D. in historical musicology, all from the University of Memphis.

Principal who claimed teens had forged "pregnancy pact" resigns abruptly
Monday 08-18-2008 4:30pm CT

GLOUCESTER, Mass. -- A high school principal who set off a furor after being quoted as saying that teenage girls formed a pact to get pregnant has resigned, weeks after his comments were publicly questioned by the mayor.

Time magazine reported in June that Joseph Sullivan said a pact made by a group of teens to get pregnant and raise their babies together was at least partly behind a spike in pregnancies at Gloucester High School. Seventeen girls at the school became pregnant this year — four times the usual number.

"What's most striking in the Gloucester story was that these girls had every intention of getting pregnant, and knew exactly how to get the job done."
"What's most striking in the Gloucester story was that these girls had every intention of getting pregnant, and knew exactly how to get the job done."

Sullivan later said he did not recall using the word "pact" but believed many of the pregnancies were intentional.

The theory arose amid a debate over whether to dispense contraceptives at a school health clinic without parents' knowledge.

Mayor Carolyn Kirk said at a June 23 news conference that she and school officials could not confirm the existence of a pact and had not invited Sullivan to the news conference because they could not verify his comments.

The principal said in a statement released by his attorney Tuesday that he believes the mayor "publicly slandered my reputation, my integrity and my intelligence" at the news conference.

"The ramifications of this whole episode on me and ... my family have been devastating and the mayor's actions and the superintendent's public silence has forced me to recognize that I have neither the trust, confidence or respect of the mayor nor the superintendent," Sullivan said in the statement sent to the Gloucester Daily Times.

He said he was resigning effective Friday and would retire.

"I have at all times tried to fair and honest with the students, the faculty, the staff and the community," he said. "At all times I have done what I have felt was in the best interests of the high school."

Kirk said in a statement Tuesday that "Dr. Sullivan will long be remembered in Gloucester for the many individual families he helped over the past 10 years. I wish him all the best in his retirement."

WHERE DO SCIENTOLOGISTS GO WHEN THEY DIE??
Thursday 08-14-2008 5:23pm CT

The Afterlife for Scientologists............
What will happen to Isaac Hayes' legendary soul?

Singer Isaac Hayes died on Sunday at the age of 65. Besides being a sex symbol, a soul-music legend, and a beloved voice-over artist, Hayes was also a dedicated Scientologist. According to his religious beliefs, what happens to Hayes now that he's passed away?

His soul will be "born again into the flesh of another body," as the Scientology Press Office's FAQ puts it. The actual details of how that rebirth occurs are not fully understood by church outsiders, but some core beliefs of Scientology are that every human being is really an immortal spiritual being known as a thetan and that the "meat bodies" we inhabit are merely vessels we shed upon death. (Members of the elite church cadre known as Sea Org, for example, sign contracts that pledge a billion years of service throughout successive lives.)

When a body dies, its thetan forgets the details of the former life, though painful and traumatic images known as
engrams remain rooted in its unconscious. In order to move up the path of spiritual progression—known as the Bridge to Total Freedom—one must eradicate these psychic scars, which cause a person to act fearfully and irrationally. Once a Scientologist has purged them through the counseling process known as auditing, he or she is said to be "clear."
Isaac Hayes. Click image to expand.

According to an avowed Scientology antagonist who claims, on her Web site, to present factual information typically omitted from church press materials, the official Scientology publication Celebrity announced that Hayes attained "clear" status around 2002, though it is not known whether he progressed onto the highest parts of the Bridge, the "operating thetan" levels. Details about what happens in these advanced stages remain closely guarded Scientology secrets, but at the very end of the process, thetans are supposed to gain power over the physical world; consequently, according to founder L. Ron Hubbard, they "feel no need of bodies," ending the cycle of birth and death and becoming pure, incorporeal souls.

If Hayes had progressed high enough on the Bridge, he might have begun preparing for his next life in the final days of this one. According to former Sea Org member Chuck Beatty, some upper-level operating thetans are said to possess the ability to choose their next set of birth parents.

In a widely reprinted 1990 Los Angeles Times article, Hubbard was quoted (apparently from a lecture given in the 1950s) describing how, after death, a thetan is carried to a "landing station" on Venus, where it is "programmed with lies," put in a capsule, and then "dumped" back on Earth, where it wanders in search of a baby to inhabit. Yet according to Laurie Hamilton, who says she has been a Scientologist since 1968, adherents are "free to accept or discard" such stories so long as they embrace the "methods and practices" of Scientology. One of the church's official Web sites stresses that a belief in past lives is not mandatory dogma but, rather, a personal truth that most Scientologists come to as they go through auditing.

The Web site also stresses that Scientologists do not believe in "reincarnation." Unlike religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, in which reincarnation functions as a kind of justice system—i.e., an individual's behavior in one life determines the caliber of the next—rebirth in Scientology is a more mechanical process. Hubbard described it as "simply living time after time, getting a new body, eventually losing it and getting a new one."

Remembering Isaac Hayes August 20, 1942 - August 10, 2008

Isaac Hayes

The weight of soul singer Isaac Hayes' legacy in Memphis could be measured in a single remark at his memorial service Monday.

"What would you say if you were flying into Memphis and they said you are about to land at Isaac Hayes International Airport," U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen asked, drawing a huge burst of applause during a four-hour service of music, speakers and video clips.

Cohen, who represented Hayes' area of Memphis, said the city should celebrate Hayes, an architect of the Memphis sound, as it celebrates Elvis Presley.

"He is a world person who the world will miss," Cohen said.

The deep-voiced soul singer died Aug. 10 after he was found unconscious at his Memphis residence. No autopsy was performed, but paperwork filed by Hayes' family doctor, David Kraus, lists the cause of death as a stroke.

About 3,000 fans and friends attended the service. They remembered Hayes for his music and his movies and for his humanitarian work that included building a school in Ghana.

"He was a lovely man, always involved with causes," the Rev. Jesse Jackson said before the service. "Literacy, civil rights. He was always there, and that's why we're all here for him."

Jackson was among the speakers that included Al Sharpton and actresses and fellow scientologists Anne Archer and Kelly Preston.

Richard Roundtree, who starred in the 1971 movie "Shaft," whose theme song was penned and performed by Hayes, was there, as was David Porter, Hayes' co-writer from his Stax Records days.

Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise and Wesley Snipes attended a private service Sunday.

The Monday service began with a drum march through the sanctuary and a video clip of Hayes and Jackson on stage together at a concert in the Watts area of Los Angeles in 1972. Jackson pulled off Hayes' cap to reveal his signature shaved head, then Hayes slipped off his robe to show his red spandex pants and chain vest.

"Thank God for Isaac living 65 years and making a difference in our lives," Jackson said.

Sharpton said Hayes never forgot his Southern roots. He recalled a time when "Hollywood didn't send its stars to us, we sent our stars to them."

"Isaac came from our culture. He emanated our culture. That's why he never lost his authenticity, never lost his conviction," Sharpton said. "There is a difference between authentic and fabricated."

As for his music, Hayes hooked up with Stax in the early '60s and with Porter crafted songs that became cultural touchstones, including Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" and "Hold On! I'm Comin'." Their sound was a gritty Southern counterpart to Motown hits coming from Detroit.
