Loss is the 9th in the last 12 games for Memphis
The loss is the ninth in the last 12 games for the Redbirds, who fell seven games behind Iowa for first place in the American Northern Division of the Pacific Coast League.
It looked as though Memphis had righted the ship, winning two straight after losing six in a row.
But the Redbirds couldn't continue their winning ways against Round Rock and Express starter Josh Miller.
Miller pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout to pick up his eighth win of the season. He issued only one walk and struck out seven Memphis batters.
Round Rock gave Miller all the run support he needed in the top of the sixth when Yordany Ramirez launched a three-run home run to deep left field, breaking a scoreless deadlock.
The Redbirds were not able to respond, and only recorded one hit the rest of the game.
Memphis manager Chris Maloney said the Redbirds made good contact with the ball, but hit the ball right to the opposition.
"We hit a lot of balls pretty good but just couldn't get anything to drop," Memphis manager Chris Maloney said. "[Miller] pitched a whale of a game. He used his defense and we didn't do anything with him."
Josh Phelps was the only Redbird to have any level of success against Miller, going 2-for-3 with two doubles. But even with Phelps twice in scoring position, the Memphis offense failed to bring him home.
With the Redbirds struggling to score runs and win games, Maloney held a team meeting earlier this week after a loss to New Orleans.
Maloney said the team need to refocus and play with more energy as they prepare for the stretch run of the season.
"We just need to show up every night and play as hard as we can," Maloney said. "That's all you can ask from a ballclub."
Memphis and Round Rock complete a four-game series Friday at 7:05 p.m. at AutoZone Park. Mitchell Boggs will head to the mound for the Redbirds.
Notes: The Redbirds have been shut out four times this season...Memphis has lost each of the last four games started by P.J. Walters...During the homestand, the Redbirds have recorded just 47 hits and only one home run through seven games...Memphis is 2-5 over that stretch.
